We had a fantastic opportunity to be part of a group of leading winemakers who attended workshops in New York, Washington Chicago and Montreal. The seminar showcased the various styles and flexibility of Chenin Blanc, from the fresh and fruity through to the rich & ripe to the sweet and sparkling. Images of wineries and vineyards were shown as part of these workshops, reminding the audience why South Africa’s winelands are considered the most beautiful in the world. We had a great audience of sommeliers, retailers, media and other trade who were clearly impressed by the uniqueness of South Africa as a wine-producing nation and by the variety and quality of the Chenin Blanc wines presented.

Alfred Portals, who last year crossed the quarter-century mark at his landmark Gotham Bar and Grill, sounds almost surprised when he says, "I still love cooking, especially at home, for guests".
He likes to get everyone involved, even if just a little, in the process" "Sharing is important. Invite guests to help in the kitchen or have them set the table. Anything I can serve tableside, I like to do."

In our part of the Cape Winelands we have noticed the arrival of winter is slightly later than usual, with its typically low, low temperatures. We are still waiting for more “cold units” to kick our vineyards into their well-earned winter rest. This time of year is characterised by an array of colour changes in the leaves, with the eventual falling of leaves from the vines and the emergence of lush green cover crops between the vine rows.

Chenin is getting a good press these days. Most folk-in-the-know are still tipping it to make the country’s best wines, and versions both sweet and dry, oxidative and reductive are picking up awards and accolades all over the world. This is great news for South African wines and bodes well for the future, but it took a vertical tasting last week for me to realise just how far we have come with this variety in such a very short time.

FMC : Full Monty Chenin. Niel Pendock's blog about the Top 100 St James wine competition
-
As the first rain in five months pitter-pattered onto the ancient 17th century thatch of the Forrester homestead on the Helderberg yesterday, no surprises that Chenin Blanc was the largest category in the Top 100 St. James Wines Competition announced to a select group of wine hacks at a St. James B&B the previous evening, with Relax with Dax the most famous.

The harvest activities have started with a bang!! It was one of our earliest harvests, the reason being that for the first time we picked a small crop of Chenin to make Méthode Cap Classique (MCC). Last week was also a hive of activity when Ken and Teresa hosted journalists Nicolette Waterford, Melvyn Minnaar and Luvo Ntezo, sommelier at the Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa. The trio flew in by helicopter in time for the start of the harvest in the FMC vineyard. The day was especially exciting for the farm workers as they were treated with short helicopter rides!
