Steenberg Vineyards Releases Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2011
-
Steenberg Vineyards in the Constantia Valley has released the latest vintage of its popular Sauvignon Blanc. Renowned as one of the top white wine cellars in South Africa, the Sauvignon Blanc varietal is what Steenberg is best known for, and this year’s vintage again exemplifies what this winery can produce. The refreshing, crisp taste of the Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2011, with its upfront citrus notes of ruby grapefruit and pronounced mineral character, is sure to find a place among the season’s ‘hotlist’ of wines to drink this summer.

First ever Steenberg Vineyard Trail Run a 'runaway' success
-
Steenberg Vineyards in the Constantia Valley held its first Steenberg Vineyard Trail Run on Heritage Day, 24 September this year. Over 300 avid walkers, runners and wine enthusiasts participated in this sold-out fun event, many having donned fancy dress costumes as their favourite 'character, fruit or icon', to enjoy a brisk walk or leisurely run along the scenic trail through Steenberg's vineyards. While many visitors were drawn to the 'feel-good' factor of spending this special public holiday in a glorious setting on a wine farm, others were excited at the prospect of winning one of the fabulous prizes on offer.

Fynbos Flowers in Full Bloom at Steenberg
-
Gardens full of colour, buzzing insects looking for nectar, carrying pollen from one flower to another. Plants waking from yearly slumber, showing flowers too many to number! Natures’ alarm clock has rung, spring has sprung.

On the Practice of Pruning
-
Drive through any vineyard during mid-winter and you will notice that the vines have been cut down to their bare bones. No leaves, no stalks, just naked cordons with stubby little shoots which have been cut back. The practice of pruning is one of the most important aspects of growing grapes.

Steenberg 2011 Harvest Report
-
The cool climate at Steenberg Vineyards means that harvest is significantly longer than in warmer growing regions, yet not as intense. The heat waves earlier in the year changed this slightly as it meant grapes had to be harvested quickly. Overall yield increased and there was great quality across the board. After all had settled, it was time to reflect on a long and busy harvest.

Food and Wine Pairing with Steenberg - the Sauvignon Semillon showdown.
-
The format has changed with the Cellar to Table feature and with it a whole new set of rules! It works as follows: one member of the Steenberg team cooks a meal and pairs it with an appropriate wine, the matching then undergoes close scrutiny from a ‘panel’ of (hungry) ‘judges’ who discuss the result at length, all under the guise of a dinner party.

Semillons to Shout About.
-
Semillon is a forgotten variety in this country. We’re all drinking Sauvignon Blanc by the gallon still, Chardonnay will always have its supporters, Chenin is making a big effort to raise its profile left, right and centre and anything from the Rhone is shrouded with the uber-coolness of the Swartland crew and their experimental combinations. And in the midst of this is Semillon, still valued as a blending partner (particularly with Sauvignon Blanc) but otherwise left on the shelf – literally in most cases.
