Exotic apricot and deep nutty oak on the nose. Richer, rounder and more glyceral than this winery's unwooded chardonnay, but without quite that wine's cut and definition. Has the sex appeal for early drinking but also the stuffing to age. I would have liked this even better with the oak dialed back a bit. "The wine resulting from excellence in the vineyard and the right climatic conditions needs correct wood aging and bottle aging before it can truly be appreciated. De Wetshof's Bateleur is only released three years after the harvest date to subject the wine to that other important element in the wine-making process, namely time. This allows the wine-lover to experience the full potential of the terroir and the beguiling effect it has on the Chardonnay cultivar." Danie de Wet This premium quality, uniquely complex Chardonnay is barrel selected by Danie de Wet personally from grapes grown on specific terroir and only in exceptional vintages. The Estate’s flagship wine. Specific barrel selection to produce a fine wine with both finesse and elegant complexity. The wine, although barrel-fermented and wood-aged for 11 months, has the typical Chardonnay flavours of peaches and citrus fruits. The Estate’s flagship. Toasted oak, grilled hazelnut, apricots and peaches. Specific barrel selection produces a wine full of style, finesse and elegant complexity. Serious, elegant & stylish lemon-gold 06 in perfect balance: restrained stonefruit aromas & flavours soften pithy grapefruit acidity, both meshed by well-integrated yr Fr oak. (Platter 2009)
