The wine is starting to show secondary characteristics of red earth, chocolate and ink on the nose, as well as a smoked meat complexity. The Merlot is full bodied with mouth-filling juicy opulence, creamy richness and very soft and textured tannins. After lithe, elegant wine, with plush plum, mulberry notes heralding unshowy yet finely tuned textures - finesse, not flamboyance, dominates. Light spice from 11% cabernet franc; integrated 60% new oak, 14% alc. (Platter 2009) At Meerlust, their Merlot has always been seen as a mini Rubicon. If you couldn’t get Rubicon, you were offered Merlot. The Merlot continues to be a distinguished wine in its own right. The Meerlust Merlot 1996 is now fully mature and has lived up to expectations of being a wine to cellar for 10-12 years. The nose is expressive and the palate still shows intense, developed fruit flavours with a pronounced minerality and sleek, silky tannins. A wine of finesse! The bouquet is fruity with cassis and plum. On the palate it is full with fine tannins and an excellent balance.
