Paul Cluver
Having planted the first commercial vineyards and having established the first wine cellar in the Elgin Valley, Paul Cluver is known as the pioneer of wine in Elgin. This family owned and family run estate has been instrumental in the success and recognition of this ward as a fine wine producing area. From the onset, Paul Cluver Wines has been determined to refine the art of winemaking. Through science, the most suited varieties have been planted to the most appropriate terroir sites. Through knowledge, passion and trial, the most suited winemaking methods have been applied. This focus has resulted in a range of aromatic whites and elegant Pinot noirs that consistently score well locally and internationally. Mindful of the environment, this wine estate is dedicated to conservation – 50% of the estate has been set aside for conservation into perpetuity. It has been awarded Biodiversity in Wine Champion status and forms part of the Kogelberg Biosphere, a World Heritage site. Awards include Drinks Business Green Awards Lifetime achievement and the Nedbank Green Award for Best Environmental Farm Practises in 2011 after being runner up in 2010. Mindful of social responsibility, the family has founded and continues to mentor two schools and the Thandi empowerment project. Recognition includes Drinks Business Ethical Company of the year runner up.
Paul Cluver Sauvignon Blanc 2011
The best of both new world and the old world Sauvignon blanc characteristics. Displaying tropical aromas on the nose and lingering clean mineral characteristics on the palate.
Paul Cluver Riesling 2010
The colour is pale, with a beautiful green apple tint. The nose is quite expressive with flavours ranging from Granny Smith apple and lime, to citrus peel and also gentle floral tones. The palate is well balanced with great interplay between the naturally retained residual sugar and the acidity. Generally regarded as restrained, it displays typical Riesling ‘nervousness’. The mineral core, which is linked to the shale rich soils in which the vines grow, astounds. It is the reason for the wine structure and the lingering after taste.
Paul Cluver 'Close Encounter' Riesling 2011
Based on the residual sugar level, it can be described as midway between German Kabinet and Spatlese in style. The colour is pale, with a beautiful green apple tint. The nose is quite expressive with flavours ranging from Granny Smith apple and lime, to citrus peel, with gentle floral tones. The palate is well balanced with great interplay between the naturally retained residual sugar and the acidity. Lovely luscious, creamy mouthfeel. Will age beautifully.
Paul Cluver Gewürztraminer 2011
The nose is immediately spicy – reminiscent of pelargonium, honeysuckle and jasmine blossoms. The palate reflects all that is detected on the nose, underpinned by surprising, enticing spring freshness. Good, textured length. Elegant balance, with refreshing interplay between residual sugar and acidity.
Paul Cluver Chardonnay 2010
No overt wood characters on the nose. Subtle citrus fruit and citrus blossom fragrances are apparent, with hints of vanilla pod and almond flakes. These characteristics follow through onto the palate, which is noticeably ‘pebbly’. The fine, fresh acidity is natural, and adds poise and focus to the wine.
Paul Cluver Pinot Noir 2009
Andries believes that the essence of a great Pinot noir is the purity of fruit and the structure of the wine. The colour is deeper than previous vintages – beautiful garnet. The nose is a combination of pepper and red berry, wild mushroom, wild berry compote with a slight meatiness. The palate is a continuation of all found on the nose with the addition of a salty, aniseed character. As usual, well structured and poised – toned - with a tantalizing mineral core.
Paul Cluver 7 Flags Pinot Noir 2009
The essence of a great Pinot noir is the purity of fruit and the structure of the wine, substantiated by natural acidity. The colour has a luminosity, reminiscent of ripe cherries. The nose holds a combination of red berry, spice, mushrooms and dark chocolate. The palate is a continuation of all found on the nose. Structured and poised, with a tantalizing mineral core.
Paul Cluver Riesling Noble Late Harvest 2010
The bright, golden hue perfectly reflects the aromas evident on the nose. These include apricot tart tatin, dried mangoes and pineapples, with hints of cinnamon, honeysuckle and peach blossom. On the palate, there is a citrus freshness that is Clementine-like. The clean finish makes it a highly pleasant after dinner drink.
