De Grendel gleamed in Platinum, Double Gold, and Gold at the 2022 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards, showcasing excellence across a diverse range of wines.
De Grendel Op Die Berg Chardonnay 2021 was one of just 17 of the 1 509 wine entries to be awarded the highest honour of Platinum, for a score of at least 96 points.
With scores of 93 or more points, De Grendel’s flagship Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc 2021 and customer favourite red blend Rubaiyat 2017 brought home Double Gold medals, placing in the top 14% of entries.
Amandelboord Pinotage 2020, Elim Shiraz 2019 and Op Die Berg Pinot Noir 2020 claimed Gold medals, with scores of 89 points and above.
De Grendel cellar master Charles Hopkins said these accolades were the latest in the strong track record of recognition built up by De Grendel in recent years.
“We are always thrilled by recognition from respected judging panels. It shows that we are delivering excellence and delivering it consistently.
“It is also really pleasing to see that we are being recognised for producing excellent wines from diverse terroir – from the high altitude, continental climate of the Ceres Plateau where our Op die Berg wines originate, to our home farm in the Durbanville valley, to the extreme maritime climate of Elim near Cape Agulhas,” Hopkins said.
The Michelangelo Awards, now in their 26th year, are Africa’s largest wine and spirits competition, recognised for the breadth of entries, the depth of expertise of the 30-strong judging panel from 18 countries, and the rigorous judging process, with only 40% of entries receiving awards.
