De Grendel Wines

The Graaff family have played a defining role in the South African political, social and business landscape for over four generations. From his humble origins as a young farm boy, the vision and foresight of First Baronet Sir David Pieter de Villiers Graaff established the foundations of a family legacy that is carried forward by his great-grandson Baronet Sir De Villiers Graaff. The historic farm De Grendel, with its sweeping views across Table Bay towards Table Mountain, is home to a family lineage that continues from generation to generation.

De Grendel
De Grendel Sauvignon Blanc
This Sauvignon Blanc is planted on the Western slope of the Tygerberg which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Besides enjoying sea views, De Grendel vineyards benefit from cool ocean breezes and misty nights. An ideal climate for fine Sauvignon Blanc production, with this cultivar becoming a core focus of the winery.
De Grendel
De Grendel Viognier
In the vineyards, Viognier berries begin to shrivel as they get close to ripeness, a unique variety characteristic that necessitates careful sampling before harvest, to ensure that balance and intricacies of flavour are achieved. A portion of this wine is aged for 90 days in Romanian oak barrels, to add a creamy, layered complexity to the final wine.
De Grendel
De Grendel Rosé
Trellised and bush vine Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coastal Region, were purposefully grown to produce this high-quality Rosé. The blend consists of equal portions of each and contribute to forming a Rosé that is both structued and fruit driven.
De Grendel
De Grendel Merlot
In 2004 the The De Grendel wine cellar was built and Cellarmaster Charles Hopkins produced the 2nd vintage of the estate's Merlot (the 1st vintage was made in the cellars at Graham Beck). Made in a classic and elegant style.
De Grendel
De Grendel Shiraz
Shiraz grapes of the highest quality were sourced from selected vineyards in the Paarl and Firgrove areas and contribute to the unique characteristics of the wine. Barrel maturation took place in French and American oak.

De Grendel
De Grendel Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc
This wine is stylistically different than our De Grendel Sauvignon Blanc in the sense that the wine leans more towards a fuller and richer style, with intense hints of minerality, gooseberries and asparagus on the nose and palate.
De Grendel
De Grendel Winifred
The wine shows a bright, medium straw colour with a darker core and medium legs indicating great viscosity.

De Grendel Op Die Berg Chardonnay
The Graaffs saw the potential of grape growing high up on the Witzenberg Mountain range in Ceres. At an altitude of 960 meters above sea level, this unique terroir exhibits South Africa’s only truly continental climate, well suited to growing Chardonnay, allowing for slower ripening and concentrated fruit. This vintage of Op die Berg Chardonnay, together with the Op die Berg Pinot Noir are the first wines from the newly-created Ceres Plateau appellation.
De Grendel
De Grendel Amandelboord Pinotage
Forming part of the flagship range, the Amandelboord Pinotage, is produced with grapes from De Grendel’s Durbanville vineyards. Inspired by the young Sir De Villiers Graaff’s memories of horse riding through the farm’s almond orchards with his grandfather. Matured for 12 months in a combination of French and American oak.
De Grendel
De Grendel Op die Berg Syrah
Op Die Berg Syrah is the third addition to the De Grendel Op Die Berg range. These wines are grown literally “on the mountain” near the village of Op-die-Berg in the Witzenberg mountains of the Ceres Plateau, on the farm Rietfontein owned by Robert Graaff, brother of De Grendel’s owner Sir De Villiers Graaff. An extremely elegant wine with lots of finesse that is sure to please the most discerning Syrah palates.

De Grendel
De Grendel Rubaiyat
The Rubaiyat was named after Omar Khayyam’s exquisite collection of 1000 Persian love poems from the 10th century, held dear by the late De Grendel owner Sir David Graaff. This flagship wine was first made in 2006 when cellar master Charles Hopkins was asked to make an ‘iconic’ wine for the estate. Successive vintages feature a different quatrain from the poem on the label, hence a blend of four varietals. Half of the blend comprises Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Petit Verdot, Merlot and a tiny portion of Cabernet Franc.
De Grendel
De Grendel Sir David Graaff
Produced in limited quantities, this wine honours the estate's late founder. This flagship blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a splash of Petit Verdot is matured in 100% new French oak for 22 months, before blending and further maturation. This ageworthy red is made to keep for 20 + years.
