Journey's End

In 1996, the Gabb family, originally from Shropshire, UK, fell in love with this picturesque wine farm, restoring it to what it is today, now surrounded by 40 hectares of beautiful vineyards.

We are incredibly fortunate to be nestled amongst the Schapenberg hills, beneath which lay 350-million-year-old decomposed granite soils. This creates one of the most prestigious terroirs in South Africa, and is where our vines are planted.

As well as fantastic views, our vineyards benefit from the cooling and cleansing south-easterly wind, known locally as the ‘Cape Doctor’, which comes in from nearby False Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Journey's End Weather Station Sauvignon Blanc
This bright and balanced Sauvignon Blanc is named after the famed SB11 ‘Weerstasie Kloon’ (Weather Station clone), one of the core components used in this wine. First propagated in Stellenbosch in the 1920s, the clone made a huge resurgence in the late 1970s. The nickname ‘The Weather Station’ arose as the original plantings were done beside an old weather station, which proved invaluable in enabling the farms to spot oncoming changes in the weather and thus pick their fruit at its optimum condition.

Journey's End Haystack Chardonnay
This fresh and vibrant Chardonnay takes its inspiration from the time-honoured practice of sowing wheat between vine rows to naturally suppress weeds and protect precious topsoil. As part of the organic and biodynamic principles embraced at Journey's End, this wine is a tribute to thoughtful stewardship and a commitment to nurturing the land for future generations. Expressive and pure, it reflects a philosophy where sustainability and winemaking work in harmony with nature.

Journey's End The Wild One Grenache Rosé
The Grenache grapes in The Journey’s End’s delicate but vivacious rosé hail from the Swartland, making it the Wild One in the group. Hitherto an arid and windswept wilderness better known for sheep and wheat farming, the challenging terroir of the wild West Coast of South Africa is brimming with potential to grow fantastic grapes

Journey's End Huntsman

In 1811, the first ever hunt in the New World took place in the Western Cape, with hounds imported from Gloucestershire, UK. The foundations of the Cape Hunt hounds’ original kennels were discovered by the Gabb family on the Journey’s End estate, and this momentous site was chosen to form the base of our cellar. Our expressive and juicy red is named in the hounds’ honour.

Journey's End Pastor's Blend
This wine pays homage to the Pastor from the local village of Sir Lowry’s Pass who regularly deliver Sunday sermons at the foot of the Journey’s End vineyard and have assisted our team in channelling resources to uplift the local community. In 2020, the Journey’s End Foundation was established to continue this support through various programmes, including a soup kitchen initiative that delivers over a million meals per year.

Journey's End The Griffin Syrah
The Griffin’s name is inspired by the Gabb family crest. A mythical beast renowned for protecting treasures and possessions of the utmost importance, Griffins can be found guarding the entrance to the Journey’s End Cellar. An engaging and distinct Syrah where, unusually, we use carbonic maceration to bring out bright fruit flavours that prove intense enough to stand up to new American oak.

Journey's End Brut Reserve Cap Classique
This Cap Classique is a blend of red and white grapes displaying the full, balanced yeasty complexity synonymous with a wine made in this style. Notes of citrus, pear, crushed almond and biscuit, this Cap Classique is full-bodied and well balanced by fresh zestiness as a result of the naturally racy acidity and delicate fruit.

Journey's End Ad Infinitum
A play on words with Journey’s End, the name Ad Infinitum is a nod to the wine’s compelling length on the palate, which seems to go on and on to infinity. The cool sea breeze from the Atlantic Ocean lends our white Bordeaux blend complexity, elegance and a saline freshness.

Journey's End Destination Chardonnay
After wind damage caused a particularly challenging vintage in 2006, just one barrel of Chardonnay was produced, and named ‘Destination’ as this was seen as turning point where Journey’s End was destined to sink or swim. When wine proved to be exceptional, the name stuck, and the Chardonnay has grown to become Journey’s End’s hallmark white wine.

Journey's End Cape Doctor
The Cape Doctor is the local name for the strong south-eastern wind that blows from False Bay and funnels through to Cape Town. Journey’s End’s Bordeaux blend is named in honour of this local wind and is pivotal to the unique character of the wine.
